Profit and cash flow are both important measures of business performance, but they tell you different things. Understanding the difference can help you make better financial decisions and avoid surprises.
What Is Profit?
Profit is what remains after your business's revenue is reduced by its expenses over a specific period.
For example, your business may generate strong sales and still have a lower profit because of operating costs, payroll, supplies, or other expenses.

What Is Cash Flow?
Cash flow looks at the actual movement of money into and out of your business.
It helps you understand whether you have enough cash available to cover upcoming expenses, pay suppliers, meet payroll and manage your day-to-day operations.
Why Can a Profitable Business Have Cash Flow Problems?
A business can report a profit while still experiencing cash-flow pressure.
For example, you may make sales on credit and record the revenue, but if customers have not paid yet, that money may not be available in your bank account.
Similarly, large upcoming payments, loan repayments or delayed customer payments can put pressure on available cash.
